Diameter is 12 inches.
Inspired by nineteenth-century watercolor studies of fish from the Winterthur Library, this bowl features hand-painted imagery by Chinese artisans rendered with delicate false gold and silver accents.
The transparent glazing technique creates luminous depth, while gracefully undulating borders evoke the movement of sea grass through water.
Highlights of the ceramics collection at Winterthur include nearly 5,000 Chinese export porcelain objects, many of them produced for the American market, as well as special-order wares once owned by famous historical figures. An astonishingly wide array of American market and other table-, tea-, and ornamental ware helps illustrate the broad range of shapes available to the general consumer.
A discontinued design now found primarily through antique dealers and specialty retailers, it is both microwave and dishwasher safe—marrying historical artistry with everyday practicality.
