Cincinnati is an exact reproduction of George Washington’s most famous set of china produced and decorated in Canton in 1784. It was brought to America on the first U.S. ship to enter the China Trade. Washington was the first President General of the Society of the Cincinnati, which was founded in 1783 to recognize the honorable service of French and American officers during the American Revolution. From the Winterthur Collection.

Highlights of the ceramics collection at Winterthur include nearly 5,000 Chinese export porcelain objects, many of them produced for the American market, as well as special-order wares once owned by famous historical figures.  An astonishingly wide array of American market and other table-, tea-, and ornamental ware helps illustrate the broad range of shapes available to the general consumer.
