The Winterthur Library houses the John & Carolyn Grossman collection of Ephemera—a remarkable assemblage of 19th-century American, British, and European postcards and other ephemeral materials never intended to endure. We've selected compelling images from this collection to create wearable art.
Also among the Library's most distinctive holdings are two tattoo "flash" design books: one produced by W. Christiansen in 1897, and another created by an anonymous artist in the 1860s. These volumes served as design catalogs, allowing customers to select their desired tattoo much as contemporary shops display ready-made designs. This collection draws designs from both of these remarkable flash books, bridging the practical and the artistic traditions of American material culture.
